An unexpected non-conjugated AIEgen with a discrete dimer for pure intermolecular through-space charge transfer emission

Abstract: By using different bases, a conjugated acrylonitrile with mixed intramolecular TBCT plus intermolecular TSCT emission and an oxirane-based non-conjugated dye with pure intermolecular TSCT emission in aggregate and crystalline states were realized.

“…Such emissive bimolecular systems may exhibit intermolecular charge transfer between the organic ligands, as seen in many all-organic emitters. 44,45 Moreover, a similar process was observed in CMA derivatives by Cao et al, 46 where an intermolecular charge transfer state formed in aggregates, while isolated molecules exhibited only emission from local excited (LE) states of the amide ligand.…”

“…In recent 5 years, the disclosed throughspace interactions (TSI) in nonconjugated hydrocarbon systems and carbonyl-based structures (Figure 1B right) dramatically promoted the development of CL. [23][24][25][26][27][28][29] Whereas, currently, TSI is still a superficial theory and the systematic structure-properties relationship of TSI has not been established. Moreover, it is difficult to characterize the ground-and excited-state packing structure of CLgens, especially for polymer materials.…”

“…Based on the current chemical technology, people cannot completely rule out these factors interfering the nontraditional luminescence, which has seriously impeded the development of CL as an independent subject. In recent 5 years, the disclosed through‐space interactions (TSI) in nonconjugated hydrocarbon systems and carbonyl‐based structures (Figure 1B right) dramatically promoted the development of CL 23–29 . Whereas, currently, TSI is still a superficial theory and the systematic structure‐properties relationship of TSI has not been established.…”

“…Notably, molecules in 1β are arranged in slightly offset parallel packing to form another tight discrete dimer with quadruple D−A interactions (3.7 Å) (Figure 2f,g). 67 Compared with that of 1α, the bigger degree of π-overlap in 1β indicates stronger π−π interactions between the neighbors, which favors efficient intermolecular excitonic coupling and thus results in redshifted emission from 471 to 485 nm (Figure S11). Their Considering the AIE character of the cyclophane, we checked the emission of 1⊃Ben c , which exhibited a blue emission centered approximately at 464 nm with an absolute quantum yield (Φ F ) of 25.6%.…”
