3-amino-2-oxazolidinone (AOZ) is the metabolite of furazolidone, which has been banned as a veterinary drug due to the potential harmful effects on human health. In this study, a novel immunochromatography test strip (ICTS) based on colloidal gold-McAb probe for detection of AOZ within tissue samples was developed. With this method, the visual cutoff levels for the test strip was achieved at 10 μg/L. Using a test strip reader, the 50% inhibition was 1.3 μg/L. The limit of detection and limit of quantification in four kinds of animal tissues were 0.15 μg/kg and 0.31 μg/kg, respectively. When used to analyze fortified samples of animal tissue, acceptable recovery rates of 76.3-98.4% were obtained. The fortified samples were detected by ICTS and confirmed by LC-MS/MS. The results of the two methods were in good agreement. The proposed ICTS was demonstrated to be a rapid and simple analytical method for detecting AOZ in animal tissue.

An immunochromatographic assay (ICA) based on surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method was developed for the detection of morphine in this study. Indirect competitive immunoadsorption was adopted in the ICA due to the small molecular weight of morphine. Antibody modified gold nanoparticles in the ICA were labeled with Raman reporters and were used as the SERS enhancement substrate. By measuring the feature peaks of Raman reporter MBA at 1,078 cm−1, a quantitative estimation of morphine can be obtained. The limit of detection of this ICA‐SERS method was 2.4 × 10−4 ng/ml for morphine, which was four orders of magnitude lower than the visual method. This study demonstrated that the proposed ICA‐SERS method is a good candidate for the rapid and accurate detection of illicit drugs in saliva. All the analyses in this paper were carried out in a Microsoft (MS) Excel platform using embedded R functions through Excel BERT add‐in.

Nitrofurans are a broad group of drugs once widely used for treatment of microbial and protozoal infections in many livestock species. However, as concerns grew globally with regard to the potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic effects of their residues in foods, they have been banned from use in many parts of the world. In order to monitor compliance to these bans it is essential to have fitfor-purpose testing methods. Immunoassays are the screening tool of choice for many testing laboratories due to their relative low cost, ease of use and high sensitivity. As is the case with all immunoassays, the most important reagents required are high quality, high affinity antibodies that exhibit the required sensitivity and specificity. Generating such antibodies for the nitrofuran family of compounds has required a great deal of effort in the design of immunogens, as the compounds, due to size, are not capable of eliciting an immune response in hosts and are not easily conjugated to carrier proteins. This article reviews the range of strategies used to successfully generate suitable antibodies to a wide range of these drugs and their metabolites. In addition, the platform technologies for nitrofuran detection have moved from simple enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-based procedures to more sophisticated multiplexing systems which can undertake faster and broader spectrum testing for the parent drugs and their metabolites. Reviews of the technologies used for immunochemical detection of the nitrofurans and of commercially available test kits are also presented.
