An Overview on Genistein and its Various Formulations

Abstract: Genistein is the natural isoflavone and a phytoestrogen with a broad range of pharmacological properties, such as tyrosine and topoisomerase inhibition. It also induces apoptosis and cell proliferation inhibition, differentiates cancer cells. Added health benefits include the reduction of osteoporosis by suppressing osteoclasts and lymphocyte functions, decreased the risk of cardiovascular attacks and relieved postmenopausal problems. Genistein traditionally used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine and are found… Show more

“…), Fava beans (Vicia faba), Psoralea (Psoralea corylifolia), and Kudzu (Pueraria lobata) [13]. The genistein content of various fruits, nuts, and vegetables can vary widely [14]. Like other plant constituents, such as lignans, which have an estrogenic effect, genistein is a typical example of a phytoestrogen compound.…”

“…Genistein, the most common and well-known isoflavone produced in soya with potential beneficial effects on human health and possible therapeutic application in a wide range of diseases, including cancer [ 67 ] in combination with Doxo exerted a synergistic effect on MCF-7/Adr cells, a Doxo-resistant breast cancer cell line, through a mechanism involving increase in the intracellular accumulation of Doxo and downregulation of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2/neu, a proto oncogene whose overexpression in breast cancer has been associated to chemotherapy resistance [ 48 ].…”
