This study represents an overview on the possibility of using wind energy to fulfill the increasing demand on energy and the lack of supplied energy in the Palestinian territories, by analyzing and discussing former studies in this field. All previous studies mainly depended on historical data, and data from automated meteorological stations for some of the main cities in Palestine. However, the previous researches depended on data collected between 1991 -2013, and used Weibull distribution function to analysing it. Moreover, all these studies agree about the possibility of exploiting wind energy, especially in high areas in Hebron in West Bank and Gaza city in Gaza Strip, to solve both the crisis of shortage electricity and the increase demand on energy. The highest wind energy is in Hebron, and the average month wind speed is between 3 m/s -7.5 m/s, and the lowest wind energy is in Jericho, and the wind speed there is less than 2.5 m/s in most time. Some studies pointed that wind energy potential can be more efficient by using the hybrid PV / Wind system. At the same time, it can minimize the cost of generated energy from using each system independently. However, there are many obstacles of using wind energy to generate electricity in Palestine.

a b s t r a c tThis paper aimed to assess the energy consumption and the removal efficiency of three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Palestine and explores the potential application of renewable energy with associated impacts on unit operations. National rules and regional guidelines for treated water are regulatory instruments for the construction approval of WWTPs in Palestine. Three urban WWTPs of various technologies were selected as case studies for the assessment. The technologies applied were conventional activated sludge with anaerobic sludge digestion, extended aeration and membrane bioreactor (MBR) serving Nablus, Al-Bireh and Altira cities, respectively. Analysis of collected data on the BOD 5 removal were 96%, 98% and 99%. The removal efficiency of nitrogen reached 85% and 95% for Al-Bireh and Altira and not accounted for in Nablus WWTP. The energy required for both liquid and sludge lines was calculated based on the available data and correlated with the treatment efficacy. Results analysis revealed wide variations in the energy consumption among the three WWTPs. Altira MBR showed normal trends compared to published literature with 2.88 kWh/ m 3 , of which 40% was consumed by the biological treatment stage. Al-Bireh WWTP consumed 1.86 kWh/m 3 with 35% of the electrical consumption for biological stage, and 24% for the sludge line. Nablus-WWTP consumed 2.25 kWh/m 3 with 62% of the energy consumed by the biological stage and 34% for sludge line. Under load operation below the design capacities, the specific energy consumption for Al-Bireh and Nablus WWTPs are contradicting common published data for activated sludge treatment systems. Use of renewable energy could assist in the reduction of the annual energy operational costs. Assessment of solar photovoltaic (PV) application could yield electricity sufficient for Altira and Al-Bireh pump station facilities covering 9%, 15%, and 1% of their energy demand. PV installation at Nablus WWTP showed marginal impacts if connected off-grid or if combined heat and power are not operational until 2020, payback periods were estimated at 7.5 and 18.7 years, respectively.

This paper investigates the impacts of dispatchability of Parabolic Trough Concentrated Solar Power (PT-CSP) systems over PV power plants in Palestinian territories. Jericho governorate was taken as a case study. All conditions required for implementing PV and PT-CSP systems are verified. The capacity of each investigated system is 1 MW, and both systems are investigated in terms of technical, economic, and environmental aspects. The parametric analysis is used to identify the most feasible option of each renewable energy system by varying the cost of each option candidate and introducing thermal energy storage (TES) to the technology of PT-CSP systems with different capacities. A software based on the MATLAB environment is programmed to estimate the energy produced from each system with the important technical, financial, and environmental indicators. It is found that the alternative of installing a 1 MW PV system is the installation of 1 MWe PT-CSP systems with 14.5 h or 18.5 h TES. Introducing TES improves the dispatchability of the system and the capacity factor which consequently justifies the PT-CSP system investment. Increasing the degree of dispatchability improves the capacity factor of the PT-CSP system from 21% at 0 h TES to 57% at 18.5 h TES (24 h operation). The capacity factor of the PV system is 18.7% which is mostly similar to PT-CSP with zero dispatchability (0 h TES). The study considers the environmental benefits by estimating the amount of avoided CO 2 emissions, and it was found that increasing the capacity factor augments the environmental benefits.
