An overview of fungal community diversity in diseased hop plantations

Abstract: Samples were taken from several hop fields presenting various symptoms. Fifty-nine pure filamentous fungal strains were isolated and identified through genomic DNA preparations, PCR amplification of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer region and database interrogations. The most frequent genera were Alternaria (16 isolates) and Epicoccum (14 isolates). The ecosystem was shown to be very diverse, since as many as 27 species belonging to 17 genera were recovered. Furthermore, many of the isolated fungi… Show more

“…Some of these phytopathogens as Phomopsis ( Phomopsis type 2), Cryptovalsa ( C.ampelina ) and Botryotinia are commonly associated with diseases in the vineyard [50], [51]. Other microorganisms as Lewia , Alternaria , namely, A. solani and Stemphylium , ( S. solani ) have been reported as phytopathogens of different crop cultures as wheat, sorghum, pistachio, potatoes and tomatoes [52], [53].…”

“…Downy mildew is most severe in areas of heavy spring rainfall, when the combination of moisture and temperature (15-25 °C) are favorable for infection and disease development. However, at least 30 different fungal species are linked to hop diseases or disorders (2).…”

“…The major market for this perennial climbing plant is based on its female inflorescence, which has been used for centuries in the brewing industry. Resins, sequestered in lupulin glands within the cones, contain different types of molecules, such as α-acids, which contribute to the bitter taste and the aroma of beer .…”

“…Actinomucor elegans var. elegans is apparently ubiquitous and has been isolated from different hosts and substrates such as rhizosphere of various plants (oat, barley, corn, wheat, alfalfa, and hop), mouse and rabbit dung, nests, feathers and fecal of free-living birds (Phalip et al 2006;Domsch et al 2007). Moreover, A. elegans var.…”
