An Overview of Anatomy and Imaging of the Anterolateral Structures of the Knee

Abstract: Despite several previous articles in the literature, never before have so many studies with regard to anterolateral knee structures been performed. The anterolateral knee complex consists briefly of the iliotibial band, with its proximal and distal attachments, the joint capsule, and the anterolateral ligament (ALL). The recently introduced ALL has several different descriptions, making it difficult to build a consensus with regard to its anatomy. An extensive description of these structures, particularly the … Show more

“…De nitions, history, biomechanical researches, anatomical examinations and clinical importance and gures of classi ed structures were added. Femoral attachment varies a lot but it is commonly found just proximal and posterior to the lateral epicondyle of the femur, 2.2 mm ventrally and 3.5 mm distally to the bular collateral ligament attachment [37], or 8 mm proximally and 4.3 mm dorsally to the lateral epicondyle of the femur [20]. The ALL runs distally, some bres attach to the lateral meniscus and the anterolateral aspect of the joint capsule (meniscal attachment), yet the majority of bres attaches to the proximal portion of the tibia (tibial attachment), dorsally to the tubercle of the iliotibial tract (4-7 mm below the articular cleft line) [82].…”
