An open-source natural language generator for OWL ontologies and its use in Protégé and Second Life

Abstract: We demonstrate an open-source natural language generation engine that produces descriptions of entities and classes in English and Greek from OWL ontologies that have been annotated with linguistic and user modeling information expressed in RDF. We also demonstrate an accompanying plug-in for the Protégé ontology editor, which can be used to create the ontology's annotations and generate previews of the resulting texts by invoking the generation engine. The engine has been embedded in robots acting as museum t… Show more

“…Besides the scripting or rule-based methods adopted by the aforementioned systems, there is also a trend to directly generate natural language statements using knowledge organization systems and mainly ontologies [Atzeni et al 2004;Kimura and Kitamura 2006;Mehta and Corradini 2007;Galanis et al 2009]. Some of them have been successfully applied in museum guides (e.g., [Galanis et al 2009;Vogiatzis et al 2008]).…”

“…Some of them have been successfully applied in museum guides (e.g., [Galanis et al 2009;Vogiatzis et al 2008]). While this method can be useful for natural language applications dealing with information that is highly structured and thus can be represented in a formal representation such as the OWL, 2 it is not suitable for our application.…”

“…The work reported here was conducted in the context of project INDIGO, where an autonomous robotic guide for museum collections is being developed (Galanis et al, 2009). The guide engages the museum's visitors in spoken dialogues, and it describes the exhibits the visitors select by generating spoken natural language descriptions from an ontology.…”

“…Since its appearance, SL attracted the attention of researchers and practitioners, and several have been the experiments aiming at coupling virtual environments with semantic web applications running on external web servers [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], and [14]; anyway, none of them seems to put the accent on the fundamental importance of the social factor in the process of sharing knowledge. On the other hand, several organizations (e.g., IBM, SUN, Northrop Grumman Corporation, etc.)…”
