An online decision support system for transportation mode choice

Abstract: Because of growing congestion problems and environmental and safety considerations, freight transportation becomes more and more a key issue in logistics in particular and in the industrial process in general. The transportation mode choice is still often made in a rather irrational way. This paper presents the outcome of surveys conducted in Belgian industry about the logistics decision maker’s perception concerning the transportation modes. The different choice criteria are determined and weighted. Finally a… Show more

“…Nevertheless, several authors also consider a wider perspective by including the analysis of congestion (Vannieuwenhuyse, Gelders, and Pintelon 2003), particle emissions (Clausen, Geiger, and Behmer 2012) or a multitude of environmental factors (Carlson, Forsberg, and Pålsson. 2001; as well as the domain ontologies of Muñoz et al 2013;Borsato 2014).…”

“…Baumol and Vinod (1970) were the first researchers that considered the choice of transportation and inventory from a point of view of a costs model as central elements in logistics flexibility. Furthermore, Buffa and Reynolds (1977), Jayaraman (1998) as well as Vannieuwenhuyse et al (2003), analyzed a transportation model that includes and important number of variables related to transportation as essential elements of logistics flexibility.…”

“…Moreover, a strategic decision-making model based on the analytical network process (ANP) to assist management in determining with which third party logistics provider to partner in the reverse logistics process has addressed (Meade & Sarkis, 2002). With regard to the pressure of fast delivery of small batches with minimized transportation cost, Vannieuwenhuyse and Pintelon (2003) presented a multi-criteria decision making tool (MCDM) to support logistics decision makers on the transportation mode selection process. These decision support systems help logistics service providers improve the functions of logistics operations like warehousing, transportation and human resources management and provide specific information for their client on marketing issues.…”
