An observational study of febrile seizures: the importance of viral infection and immunization

Abstract: BackgroundFebrile seizures are common in young children. Annual peaks in incidence mirror increased respiratory virus activity during winter. Limited virological data are available using modern diagnostic techniques for children with febrile seizures. We aimed to determine the frequency of detection of specific viral pathogens in children with febrile seizures, to describe risk factors including recent vaccination and clinical features associated with specific etiologies.MethodsAn observational study was perfo… Show more

“…Human bocavirus was first identified in 2005 and was previously detected in 9-10.4% of children with FS. 24,26 In our study, human bocavirus is mainly detected in children with complex FS; however, human bocavirus has been detected with other respiratory viruses and it is difficult to explain complex FS with only this pathogen. Further studies on the neurological consequences of bocavirus in young children are needed.…”

“…Pediatric infectious diseases are the most frequent environmental causes, of which viral infections are the most frequent entities in children. Recent studies have explored the connections between febrile seizures and respiratory and enteric viral infections [5,6].…”

“…The peak incidence of FSs is in children aged 18 months, with the risk being markedly lower in those aged below 6 months or over 5 years 4) . The most common causes of FSs are viral infections; among them, influenza infection is associated with a higher incidence of FSs than any other respiratory virus 5) .…”
