An objective assessment of nerve stimulators used for peripheral nerve blockade*

Abstract: SummaryNerve stimulation is considered by many to be the current 'gold standard' for locating peripheral nerves. Thirteen nerve stimulators were subjected to a battery of tests performed by two independent observers under standardised conditions using a digital oscilloscope, a calibrated resistance and a novel scoring system. Individual scores were assigned for the signal waveform, current intensity, impulse duration, maximum load output and functionality of each nerve stimulator; the maximum score achievable … Show more

“…We used the MultiStim Sensor nerve stimulator from Pajunk GmbH (Geisingen, Germany; Figure ). A major advantage of the stimulator is its controllability, which is adjusted according to the progress of the disease . Acute procedures were carried out with patients in a prone position with a pad placed under the abdomen to achieve a trunk and lower limb angle of 30 degrees, exposing the sacrococcygeal region and anus.…”

“…25 Despite contemporary designs and modern circuitry, nerve stimulators vary in clinical performance. 20,21,23 Barthram 21 demonstrated current output inaccuracies over varying resistance loads among different nerve stimulators used for peripheral nerve blockade. Only 3 of 6 nerve stimulators delivered a target current of 0.3 to 3.0 mA with T20% accuracy.…”

“…Premier modern nerve stimulators are designed and programmed to guarantee extremely high accuracy for nerve localization. Jochum et al published an objective assessment of widely available peripheral nerve stimulators that are presently marketed (Jochum et al, 2006). Objective scores were assigned, with those having the most accuracy and desirable characteristics achieving the highest evaluations.…”
