An nD modelling approach to improve communication processes for construction

Abstract: Abstract. The number and variety of design and construction stakeholders can make effective and efficient collaboration difficult, a situation that is not helped by the sequential way in which many of the processes work. This paper presents the findings of a number of workshops focussing on the problems and barriers inherent in the industry which would currently prevent effective implementation of a process improvement tool. Discussion attempts to illustrate the ways in which the concurrent approach that nD Mod… Show more

“…The aim of this study is to identify the MHPs unique features’ induced of communication ineffectiveness and delineate the implications of the findings for mass housing practitioners and stakeholders towards engendering effective communication performance. Particularly, communication performance assessment of the inherent communication ineffectiveness of the unique features of MHPs founded on empirical studies will lend credence to legitimizing potential actions and steps towards stimulating effective communication outcomes in MHP delivery (Marshall-Ponting and Aouad, 2005; Gorse and Emmitt, 2003).…”

“…BIM builds upon the concepts of 3D modelling by incorporating non-graphical object data into the model. Many studies define BIM through the benefits it confers, including parametric modelling (Huang et al, 2009), detailed building analysis (Krygiel et al 2008), 4D programming whereby the construction programme is linked into the building model (Mahalingam et al 2010), 5D modelling, whereby cost data is also integrated into the building model (Goedert and Meadati, 2008) and more generally nD modelling (Marshall-Ponting and Aouad, 2005). For the purposes of the research presented here, BIM is defined as a comprehensive accumulation of information (including documents) about the design, construction and operation of a building, anchored to a geometric (2D/3D) model of the building (as such a model emerges).…”

“…Barlish and Sullivan [26] reported a 42% reduction in the frequency of change orders and a 67% reduction in the frequency of schedule modifications after BIM was launched. Marshall-Ponting and Aouad [27] concluded that nD modelling to support communications had great potential to overcome the problem of information loss in construction processes based on discussions from several workshops.…”
