An MCMI-III Discriminant Function Analysis of Incarcerated Felons

Abstract: Discriminant function analyses were employed to predict institutional misconduct in a sample of 128 incarcerated offenders. Misconduct was divided into two categories: reprimands and behavioral consequences (i.e., early lockups, segregation, monetary penalties, and suspensions). Results indicated that the MCMI-III provides greater predictive utility than does demographic information alone. In the prediction of reprimands, an overall correct classification rate of 79% was obtained using both demographic and MCM… Show more

“…Once the evaluations are completed on the offenders, the resultant information is most commonly used to identify risk and inform security level placement decisions (e.g., maximum, medium, minimum security). The psychological assessments and screening for mental disorders have also been used to ascertain inmates' specific need for mental health services (Megargee & Bohn, 1977), predict future violence or institutional violations (Gacono, 2000;Fraboni, Cooper, Reed, & Salstone, 1990;Kelln, Dozois, & McKenzie, 1998;Megargee, Mercer, & Carbonell, 1999), and predict recidivism in parole (Borzecki, Wormith, & Black, 1988).…”

“…The various editions of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-I; Millon, 1982;MCMI-II;Millon, 1987;MCMI-III;Millon, Millon, & Davis, 1994) have been increasingly employed in clinical and forensic settings (Donat, Walters, & Hume, 1991;Fals-Stewart, 1992;Flynn & McMahon, 1984;Gibertini & Retzlaff, 1988;Kelln, Dozois, & McKenzie, 1998;Lewis & Harder, 1990;McCann, 1990;Retzlaff & Gibertini, 1990). Its latest version, the MCMI-III, purports to measure long-standing personality patterns and tendencies toward DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) Axis I clinical syndromes.…”

“…Although the MCMI has been employed within offender populations (Carpenter, Peed, & Eastman, 1995;Hart, Forth, & Hare, 1991;Kelln et al, 1998; McCormack, Barnett, & Wallbrown, 1989;McNiel & Hever, 1990;Wales, 1995;Weekes, Morison, Millson, & Fettig, 1995;Wierzbicki & Howard, 1992), only two studies have examined its factor structure. McCormack, Barnett, and Wallbrown (1989) found 4 factors based on the combined clinical and personality scales of the MCMI-I.…”
