An ion-selective crown ether covalently grafted onto chemically exfoliated MoS2 as a biological fluid sensor

Abstract: We describe the basal plane functionalization of chemically exfoliated molybdenum disulfide (ce-MoS2) nanosheets with a benzo-15-crown-5 ether (B15C5), promoted by the chemistry of diazonium salts en route the fabrication and...

“…[ 35 ] Such phase transition has been identified either by treating a chemical vapor deposition (CVD)‐grown monolayer with n‐butyllithium [ 39 ] or by liquid exfoliation with n‐butyllithium treatment of bulk TMDs via Li intercalation into the lattice. [ 40 ] In contrast, upon liquid exfoliation via a superacid, such as chlorosulfonic acid, intercalation of MoS 2 and WS 2 , as representative species of the wider family of TMDs, proceeds with retention of the semiconducting phase of the material. [ 41 ] In this case, TMDs act as a weak base due to the presence of the lone electrons of sulfur, which can be protonated by the superacid.…”

“…Devices based on pristine MoS 2 can interact with electrolytes such as NaCl, modifying the conductivity. 51 In fact, pristine MoS 2 devices start to respond to NaCl at concentrations of 0.23 μg ml −1 in pristine MoS 2 . On the other hand, the addition of antibodies reduces the sensitivity until 2 mg ml −1 (see Fig.…”

“…Our approach relies on a simple protocol based on conventional laboratory apparatus, not requiring the use of a dry box. 25 A commercial semiconducting bulk MoS 2 powder was treated with n -butyl lithium under nitrogen, followed by removal of the excess organolithium reagent and tip sonication of the organolithium-intercalated MoS 2 material in distilled water. Accordingly, we managed to produce dispersions with a concentration of exfoliated nanosheets of up to 0.96 mg mL −1 , which are stable for over a month if stored in the absence of light and oxygen.…”
