Urban overheating, intensified by climate change, poses a critical challenge in Central European cities, witnessing a rise in tropical days. Conventional mechanical cooling systems in buildings significantly contribute to carbon dioxide emissions, exacerbating global warming. In response, windcatchers—traditional Iranian natural cooling systems—emerge as a promising sustainable solution for contemporary architecture, even in non-arid climates. This research aims to evaluate windcatchers’ efficacy in improving building thermal comfort in Central European climates, focusing on Vienna’s urban environment. This study identifies optimal windcatcher designs by analyzing key variables: height variation, inlet dimensions, urban exposure, Building Management System (BMS) temperature thresholds, and integration with an earth tube system using Design Builder simulation software version 6. The findings reveal that a windcatcher standing at 2.5 m tall, with inlet dimensions of 0.9 m by 1.4 m, in an open, less densely populated urban setting, and with open valves when indoor temperatures surpass 22 °C, demonstrates the most effective reduction in cooling load. Moreover, both one-sided and two-sided windcatchers outperform conventional ventilation through openings. Additionally, combining a one-sided windcatcher with an earth tube system ensures efficient cooling even when exterior temperatures exceed 25 degrees Celsius. When augmented by a heat pump, this integrated system can provide heated ventilation.

Orta Doğu'daki geleneksel yaşam alanları, binlerce yıllık mimari birikimin ürünleridir. Aşırı sıcak iklimle başa çıkmak için geliştirilen mimari ürünler, bu birikim içerisinde önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Antik dönemlerden beri mekânları havalandırmak ve soğutmak için geliştirilen rüzgâr yakalayıcılar, bu birikim içinde en çok dikkat çeken örnekler arasındadır. Bu çalışmada amaç, Şanlıurfa'daki rüzgâr yakalayıcıların (badgeller) ayakta kalan örneklerini tanıtmak, belgelemek ve korunmada öncelikli olanlarını vurgulamaktır. Çalışma kapsamında öncelikle ilgili alanyazın taranmış ve görüşme tekniği kullanılarak rüzgâr yakalayıcılar hakkında kullanıcılardan bilgi toplanmıştır. Daha sonra, geniş bir alan çalışması kapsamında Şanlıurfa'daki rüzgâr yakalayıcıları çizim ve fotoğraflar ile belgelenmiştir. Alan çalışması sonucunda, Şanlıurfa'daki geleneksel evlerin sadece üçünde rüzgâr yakalayıcıların özgün yapısının korunduğu belirlenmiştir. Bunların dışında, üç evde ve bir savunma yapısında bulunan, orijinal yapısı ya da işlevselliği bozulmuş olan rüzgâr yakalayıcılar da çalışma kapsamında sunulmuştur. Rüzgâr yakalayıcıların, evlerde sadece eyvan birimini havalandırdığı saptanmıştır. Savunma yapısındaki rüzgâr yakalayıcının ise bir odayı havalandırdığı belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca diğer örneklerdeki havalandırma elemanlarından biçim olarak farklı olan özgün bir havalandırma elemanı da bu çalışma kapsamında belirlenmiştir.

PurposeLife experience in hot and arid areas of Iran has proved that in the transitional seasons (spring and autumn) in which the climate is not too hot, passive cooling systems such as windcatchers (baadgir) have functioned well. This paper intends to investigate the efficiency of a single-side windcatcher as a passive cooling strategy; the case study is the Bina House windcatcher, located in Khousf town, near Birjand city, Iran.Design/methodology/approachTo achieve the aim, air temperature, relative humidity, wind data and mean radiant temperature were measured by the related tools over five days from September 23 to October 23. Then, the thermal performance of the windcatcher was examined by analyzing the effects of all these factors on human thermal comfort. Quantitative assessment of the indoor environment was estimated using DesignBuilder and its computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool, a thermal comfort simulation method to compare the cooling potential of the windcatcher. Windcatcher performance was then compared with two other common cooling systems in the area: single-side window, and evaporative cooler.FindingsThe results showed that both windcatcher and evaporative cooler can provide thermal comfort for Khousf residents in the transitional seasons; but the difference is that an evaporative cooler needs to consume water and electricity power, while a windcatcher is a passive cooling system that uses clean energy of wind.Originality/valueThe present study, by quantitative study of single-side windcatchers in a desert region, measured the climatic factors of a historical house and compared it with thermal comfort criteria. Therefore, the results of field measurements were analyzed, and the efficiency of the windcatcher was compared with two other cooling systems, namely single-side ventilation and evaporative cooler, in the two seasons of summer and autumn (transition seasons).
