The purpose of research is to compare monitoring results with those result of numerical analysis and to present plan for the first reservoir impounding of the Rockfill dam ten years after end of constructing the dam body. The stability of dam body has been examined using the results of numerical analysis and the values obtained from the sensors installed in the dam. The correctness and accuracy of the geotechnical parameters of the dam body materials were confirmed by comparing the results of numerical analysis and monitoring based on back analysis. The linear correlation coefficients between the data obtained from the sensors and the numerical analysis results for the items of settlement, pore water pressure and total stress are 84, 67 and 99 %, respectively. The compatibility between the numerical analysis results, design assumptions, and instrumentation results were examined. The value of the arching ratio obtained from the results of instrumentation and numerical analysis in the core of the dam is 0.47 and 0.35, respectively, which indicates the safety of the dam. Ultimately, numerical sensitivity analyses was carried out for presente special impounding program for dam with controlling simultaneous two items the pore water pressure and effective stress changes in the clay core, with ten years passed since the completion of construction dam body.

Visualizing water seepage dynamics in grotto relics via atom-based representative model

Water seepage in grotto relics, i.e., Yungang Grottoes, Dazu Rock Carvings, is a key issue to accurately describe the deterioration and weathering process of grotto rock mass. Considering rainfall infiltration, Finite element simulation was performed for studying the water flow through macro-channel of fractured rock in the 4th cave of Yungang Grottoes, where a group of joints with directions of S62°E and N5°W are widely developed. A 3D atom-based representative model was derived from X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and the related semi-quantitative calculation of grotto rock powders, for visualizing the associated seepage characteristics through micro-channel by means of molecular dynamics simulation, for the first time. By analyzing various properties, ranging from the configuration and energetic behaviors to the dynamic characteristics, the calculated water flux and mass flow rate were equal to 270 ns−1 and 8.10 × 10–12 g s−1, respectively. A dynamic process of water transport from the entrance region to the exit region was examined and it is consistent with the relative concentration profiles at the corresponding stage. The tagged O atoms experienced a zigzag movement instead of linear motion as expected, roughly exhibited the same target direction. The seepage characteristics in grotto relics experienced a complex evolution process and three types can be summarized: water infiltrates through micro-channels with a low flow rate; it flows through fracture with a relatively high flow rate; it turned into a kind of analogous pipe flow in inter-connected fracture network, resulting in water seepage hazard. Current simulation studies provide helpful insights for understanding the water flow-infiltration behavior of fractured rock in grotto relics.

Piping, erosion at the contact of flowing soil, and leaching damage pose a serious leakage risk to earth-rock dams in the siltstone regions. With increasing reservoir operation time, seepage phenomena commonly occur in earth-rock dams, leading to progressively severe damage to the dam body. To understand the distribution of seepage in an earth-rock dam, including its location and magnitude, an imaging analysis of the dam structure is necessary. This involves determining the leakage positions and the underlying reasons. In this study, we conducted a high-resolution electrical resistivity tomography (HERT) investigation to characterize the leakage conditions of the Maoshan Reservoir earth-rock dam in the siltstone area of Jiangxi Province. To enhance the reliability of the HERT data interpretation, drilling, and water pressure tests were employed to validate the interpretations of low-resistivity zones. By applying this cascading survey and analysis method, we obtained spatial variability information on the apparent resistivity of the dam. The resistivity imaging of the entire dam revealed significant variations in apparent resistivity in the study area. Low-resistivity anomalies and high-resistivity anomalies were observed on both the upstream and downstream slopes of the dam. These anomalies represent saturated water channels and impervious bodies, with resistivities less than 200 Ωm and greater than 700 Ωm, respectively. The results of this study indicate that a cascading survey combining HERT and drilling is effective for analyzing the leakage positions of earth-rock dams, providing valuable insights for engineers in implementing effective anti-leakage measures in siltstone area reservoirs.
