An investigation of scaffolded reading on EFL hypertext comprehension

Abstract: With the rapid growth of computer technology, some printed texts are designed as hypertexts to help EFL (English as a foreign language) learners search for and process multiple resources in a timely manner for autonomous learning. The purpose of this study was to design a hypertext system and examine if a 14-week teacher-guided print-based and hypertext reading intervention might benefit non-traditional EFL students' reading comprehension. Non-traditional EFL students are older students with greater work exper… Show more

“…In the contrary, Tseng (2008) in his study found that when reading hypertext the students displayed some physical responses such as eyestrain and headaches. However, Shang et al (2015) suggested a strong and positive relationship between the use of hypertext reading and attempt of future hypertext use, which suggests that the EFL reading process may be directed to hypertext reading in the future.…”

“…For high‐performance learners, the learning material might not have been difficult for them to master, but the operation of the learning system directly affected their skill development in the CAULL mode. As indicated by Shang (), a well‐designed u‐learning application with an easy‐to‐use interface would guide students to engage in practice and hence enhance their foreign language outcomes. Most importantly, this finding implies that language teachers and system designers should pay attention to the ease of use of learning technology for HA learners to improve their receptive skills.…”

“…Research (Eskenazi, Michael, & Folk, 2015;Linderholm et al, 2013;O'Sullivan & Dallas, 2010;Reid, 2013;Tang, 2016;Yang, 2010) indicated that reading instruction had influenced students' ability to read fluently and efficiently. Research (Dreyer & Nel, 2003;Grgurović, Chapelle, & Shelley, 2013;Shang, 2015;Tsai et al, 2016;Wright, Fugett, & Francine, 2013) also showed that integrating modern technology into teaching strategies resulted in improving students' performance in reading comprehension and reading strategies. To investigate such integration, the present study collected data from 100 undergraduate students at the College of Languages and Translation, IMAMU University.…”

“…The study also showed that digital texts played an important role in fostering students' comprehension skills and metacognitive awareness. In this respect, Shang (2015) examined the effect of hypertexts on scaffolding EFL reading comprehension, and found a significant difference in the comprehension scores of those students who used hypertext-based reading. Kissau and Algozzine (2015) indicated that the mode of instructional delivery had an impact on self-efficacy.…”
