An investigation into the factors governing the oxidation of two-dimensional Ti3C2MXene

Abstract: We discuss the dominant factors influencing the rate of oxidation of Ti3C2TxMXene flakes, and present guidelines for their storage with the aim of maintaining the intrinsic properties of the as-prepared material.

“…were able to combine the good rate performance and cycling stability of MXenes with the low delithiation potentials of TiO 2 and Nb 2 O 5 in TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x , Nb 2 O 5 @Nb 2 CT x and Nb 2 O 5 @Nb 4 C 3 T x composites . Partially oxidising MXenes demonstrates a facile approach to electrode fabrication, and recent developments in our understanding of MXene oxidation (often considered a drawback of MXenes in application) readily prepare the scientific community to explore and optimise these routes further.…”

“…Furthermore, the chemical stability of MXene‐based photothermal materials is important for water purification applications. Compared with pristine MXene, which became almost completely colorless after 28 days, [14c] the obtained CM‐0.1‐P showed excellent chemical stability (Figure S2, Supporting Information). After dispersing in water for 3 months, the CM‐0.1‐P still retained the initial dark black color and layered structure with adhered Co 3 O 4 NPs (Figure S2a,b, Supporting Information), evidenced by the energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy spectrum (Figure S2d, Supporting Information) and the elemental mapping analysis (Figure S3, Supporting Information).…”

“…[ 13 ] Although numerous strategies of MXene‐based materials have been implemented to enhance the solar steam generation efficiency, there are still some issues to be considered and resolved. For example, Ti 3 C 2 MXene was easily deteriorated when it came into contact with water and dissolved oxygen, [ 14 ] which was neglected by previous studies for solar steam generation. In addition, there is still much room for improvement in evaporation rate and corresponding energy efficiency.…”

“…The small species that appeared on the edges of MXene layers are most likely TiO 2 nanocrystals, for it is well-known by now that TiO 2 nanoparticles form on MXene surfaces due to the fast oxidation of titanium carbide in aqueous and/or oxygen conditions and the process starts on the edges. 27,[42][43][44][45] More SEM images of the multilayer akes together with larger accordionlike structures can be found in Fig. S1 in ESI.…”
