An Investigation into Fixed Energy Consumption of Machine Tools

Abstract: Improving energy efficiency of manufacturing processes requires knowledge about the energy consumption as a function of the machine tool and cutting process itself. Both theoretical and empirical models of unit process energy consumption have emphasized the relevance of fixed energy consumption which ensures the machine readiness. However, the machine tool behavior during the stand-by mode is lack of thorough study. This paper presented the investigation of fixed energy consumption from definition and descript… Show more

“…A Fixed Power, demanded for the operational readiness of the machine and independent from the process, and a Load Dependent Power, demanded to distinctively operate components enabling and executing the main process [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]. Among the energy saving measures at machine level, it is possible to differentiate between process control and state control.…”

“…The idle power level (P idle ) normally remains constant, which can be easily obtained after the power measurements. 21 Unfortunately, the idle time per product (t idle ) is not directly documented in industries, and it fluctuates from part to part. Alternatively, the cycle time (t cycle ) can be used to estimate the idle time by deducting the period of value adding activities recorded in the measurements.…”

“…17,18 In current machine tool's energy consumption research, the input and output power of electrical components can be measured or calculated by the acquired signals with current, voltage, or power sensors, which can be integrated in CNC system. 15,16 However, the measurement and calculation of cutting power is relatively complicated.…”
