In this work, the nanomechanical properties involving the indentation size effect (ISE) and yield strength of a surface-modified layer of 18CrNiMo7-6 steel after case hardening were investigated via nanoindentation experiments. The experimental results showed that the hardness increased with an increase in strain rate; the contact stiffness versus indentation depth curves take the form of upper convexity due to residual compressive stress relaxation. On the basis of the Ruiz-Moreno model, a modified model considering the cutoff parameter as a function of indentation depth was proposed. This model was able to better describe the ISE of the surface-modified layer. With the Hough transform error angle of 0.1° as the critical value (h0.1° is the corresponding depth), when h > h0.1°, the yield strength calculated by the Ma model started to disperse at the depth of h0.1°. These results provide useful insight into the local mechanical properties of 18CrNiMo7-6 steel after carburizing and quenching treatment.

To optimize the process parameters, it is necessary to exactly predict failure modes during deep drawing of coated metal sheets, where two main failure forms are fracture and wrinkling. In this paper, finite element simulations based on continuous damage mechanics were used to study the failure behavior during a cylindrical deep drawing of metal sheets with nickel coating. It is shown that taking the effect of blank holder force into account, these two failure modes can be predicted. The simulation results are well consistent with that obtained from experiments. During the process of deep drawing, metallic sheets are subjected to the large irreversible deformation, and two primary failure modes of fracture and wrinkling may appear [1] . Huge design and control efforts have been made to eliminate the occurrence of failure through the proper design of blank [2] , tooling configuration [3] , and the selection of process parameters [4] . In theory, identification of material properties of microscopic materials, such as thin film or single crystal, could be carried out with physical experimentation followed by simulation and optimization to fit the simulation result to the experimental data. However, the optimization with a number of finite element simulations tends to be computationally expensive. This paper proposes an identification methodology based on nanoindentation that aims at achieving a small number of finite element simulations. The methodology is based on the construction of a surrogate model using artificial neural-networks. A sampling scheme is proposed to improve the quality of the surrogate model. In addition, the differential evolution algorithm is applied to identify the material parameters that match the surrogate model with the experimental data.The proposed methodology is demonstrated with the nanoindentation of an aluminum matrix in a die cast aluminum alloy. The result indicates that the methodology has good computational efficiency and accuracy.
