An Introductory Comparison of Forest Ecological Conditions in Northeast China and Ontario, Canada

Abstract: For two fairly similar areas, forest vegetation is compared in relation to broad features of the land. Items considered include location and land areas, history and forest resources, relief and climate, potential commercial tree species and vegetation regions, bedrock geology, soil parent materials and soil development. Ecological knowledge is considered important for the effective transfer of silvicultural technology and the exchange of plant material between the two areas. Key words: China, Ontario, Vegetati… Show more

“…The disjunct origins of the flora of the two continents in the Late Cretaceous or Eocene are discussed by Hsii (1983), Hou (1983), Ying (1983), Little (1983), and Axelrod (1983). Community structure and composition are discussed by Hou (1983), Wang et al (1980), and Burger and Zhao (1988). The distribution of ecosystems across the landscape is described and compared withthose of the Great Lakes area by Barnes et al (1992).…”

“…The forests of northeastern China are similar to those of the Great Lakes region of North America (Burger and Zhao 1988; Barnes et al 1992). At lower, relatively warmer elevations of the mountainous Chinese terrain, the forests are dominated by Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb.…”

“…There are, however, forests in Asia that are ecologically similar to Canadian forests (Burger and Shidong 1988) and which contain promising beneficial insects. Recently, recommendations have been made to Forestry Canada to develop the necessary protocols for exploration and importation of beneficial insects from the People's Republic of China.…”

“…(Burger and Zhao 1988). The characteristic forest is composed of P. koraiensis (up to 50% of stand volume) mixed with valuable tolerant hardwoods such as Tilia amurensis, Betula costata, Fraxinus mundshurica, Ulmus japonica, Acer mono, Juglans rnandshunca, and Phellodendron amurense; pioneer species are B. platyphylla and Populus davidiana (Burger and Zhao 1988).…”
