An Interpretation of the Significance of ‘Time’: The Case of English and Persian Proverbs

Cultural Linguistics as an investigative framework for paremiology: comparing time in English and Persian

“…Although the previous studies in this research line supported a culture‐revealing aspect of proverbs in light of concrete concepts, such as animal (Estaji and Nakhavali ), colour (Aliakbari and Khosravian ) and woman (Zahedi and Imani ), the data in the present study has proved the same for time as an abstract concept as well. This is specifically in line with Dabbagh and Noshadi () who unmasked cultural views of time as represented in English and Persian proverbs using systemic functional linguistics and temporal conceptualisation model. This highlights the presence of a cultural level of conceptualisation far and above the lexical conceptual level of time proposed by Evans ().…”

Similarly, Dabbagh and Noshadi (), in an investigative analysis of the way(s) English and Persian people conceptualise time, analysed cross‐culturally equivalent proverbs based on both Halliday's () systemic functional model and Evans's () model of temporal conception.
