An Inter-Rater Reliability Study for the Rorschach Performance Assessment System

Abstract: In response to research demonstrating limitations in Rorschach validity and reliability, Meyer, Viglione, Mihura, Erard and Erdberg (2011) have developed a new Rorschach System, R-PAS. Based on the available research findings, this system attempts to ground the Rorschach in its evidence base, improve its normative foundation, integrate international findings, reduce examiner variability, and increase utility. As this Rorschach system is new, no reliability studies have yet been produced. The present study soug… Show more

“…Taken together, these results confirm that, especially when data are scored by clinicians, the new EII-3 has excellent inter-rater reliability, at a level essentially identical to A sample of 50 R-Optimized administered records were available from a study being completed on R-PAS inter-rater reliability (Viglione, Blume-Marcovici, Miller, Giromini, & Meyer, 2011). Protocols were collected from diverse groups including children and adult non-patients, adolescent sex offenders, well-controlled older schizophrenics, and inpatients and outpatients.…”

“…Lastly, some of our inter-rater reliability values were relatively low, compared to other data reported in the literature (e.g., Meyer et al, 2002;Viglione, Blume-Marcovici, Miller, Giromini, & Meyer, 2012;Viglione & Taylor, 2003). Though both the original and re-scored records were coded by (graduate) students, the initial coding was also carefully supervised by a senior clinician and researcher who has been using the Rorschach for years.…”

“…Regarding the reliability of the R-PAS, enumerated in both Heilbrun's (1992) and Marlowe's (1995) proposed models, recent research suggests that the R-PAS demonstrates good to excellent inter-rater reliability, with a mean intra-class correlation of .88 and median of .92 (Viglione, Blume-Marcovici, Miller, Giromini, & Meyer, 2012). These levels exceed Heilbrun's (1992) suggested benchmark of .80 for psychometric tests to be used in forensic contexts.…”
