Conventional model updating methods for the structures have used global structural responses which are modal parameters obtained through vibration measurements. Although models updated by modal parameters estimate global structural responses accurately, they have difficulties to predict local responses for safety assesment of structural members. The safety of structural members in the structures has been evaluated through the stress estimation based on strain measurements. Thus, this study additionally uses measured strain responses of structural members to perform model updating besides modal parameters. In the proposed method, the objective functions are set to the differences of the global and local responses obtained from updated model and measurement and those functions are minimized by NSGA-II, one of the multi-objective optimization techniques. The strain responses predicted from updated model are used for safety assessment of the steel frame structures. The proposed method are verified by numerical and experimental studies through the impact hammer tests for a steel frame specimen.

Summary This paper proposes a method for the finite element model updating using static load tests under the framework of observability analysis. Previous works included measurement errors in the coefficient matrix of the observability equations. This impeded the obtainment of accurate estimations. To deal with this issue, the proposed method relocates the errors and incorporates an optimization procedure to minimize the square sum of these errors. This method is able to identify the structural parameters of complex structures where the axial and bending behaviors are coupled, such as inclined beams or frame structures. Its application is illustrated by three structures. First, the method was validated in a beam‐like structure by comparing it with other methods in the literature. Then the effects of different factors were investigated in a multistory frame and a rigid frame bridge with inclined piers. These factors include the curvatures, the inclusion of rotation measurements, and the constraints on the range of unidentifiable parameters. The importance of rotation measurements is demonstrated in static structural system identification.

This paper proposes a wireless inclinometer sensor node for structural health monitoring (SHM) that can be applied to civil engineering and building structures subjected to various loadings. The inclinometer used in this study employs a method for calculating the tilt based on the difference between the static acceleration and the acceleration due to gravity, using a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS)-based accelerometer. A wireless sensor node was developed through which tilt measurement data are wirelessly transmitted to a monitoring server. This node consists of a slave node that uses a short-distance wireless communication system (RF 2.4 GHz) and a master node that uses a long-distance telecommunication system (code division multiple access—CDMA). The communication distance limitation, which is recognized as an important issue in wireless monitoring systems, has been resolved via these two wireless communication components. The reliability of the proposed wireless inclinometer sensor node was verified experimentally by comparing the values measured by the inclinometer and subsequently transferred to the monitoring server via wired and wireless transfer methods to permit a performance evaluation of the wireless communication sensor nodes. The experimental results indicated that the two systems (wired and wireless transfer systems) yielded almost identical values at a tilt angle greater than 1°, and a uniform difference was observed at a tilt angle less than 0.42° (approximately 0.0032° corresponding to 0.76% of the tilt angle, 0.42°) regardless of the tilt size. This result was deemed to be within the allowable range of measurement error in SHM. Thus, the wireless transfer system proposed in this study was experimentally verified for practical application in a structural health monitoring system.
