Abstract: With the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the question of society’s capability to deal with an acute health crisis is, once again, brought to the forefront. In the core is the need to broaden the perspective on the determinants of a country’s ability to cope with the spread of the virus. “…In the Western Balkans countries, nephrologists have faced signi cant challenges even before the pandemic be it through lack of funding, poor governance or political unrest. Others have emphasised that some Eastern countries actually started implementing infection control measures before their Western counterparts and also noted that adherence to government guidance may sometimes be better in these countries, for example when people feel more vulnerable generally (3). Here, we report on the impact of COVID-19 on dialysis and transplant patients during two waves of the pandemic in two renal centres in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia.…”

“…Having a better-equipped health system and more competent institutions are not enough to cope with the transmission of viruses such as COVID-19 in a country. The mechanism of response to the virus outbreak was more critical than the country's systemic preparedness [23]. Government initiatives were the most important ones.…”
