Foreign Language learning is relatively not a new concept within Pakistan. As, young students in order to avail opportunities abroad learn foreign languages for better exposure and cultural assimilation in the new context. Previously, French and German languages were two foreign languages that students used to acquire. However, with the introduction of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, new realities and opportunities have been explored. As a result, of this expansionist project, universities within Pakistan are offering Chinese language courses along with the relevant degree programs. Under the current circumstances, there is a sheer need to investigate the beliefs with regard to foreign language aptitude towards Chinese as a foreign language. Therefore, the present study examined the foreign language aptitude of undergraduates 'who were learning Chinese as a compulsory foreign language course in a Public Sector University in Karachi. For this quantitative study, data was collected from 200 undergraduate students using BALLI questionnaire. The descriptive statistics was used to analyze the quantitative data. The findings reveal that undergraduates hold broad range of mixed beliefs about learning Chinese. They hold strong positive beliefs about foreign language aptitude and their expectations from Chinese in future. Also, curriculum designers, decision makers and teachers must be aware of undergraduates' beliefs which are essential in terms of improving curriculum and teaching methodologies.

The present study includes the published literature during the first two decades of 21st century (2001-2020) for the purpose of theoretical review of studies in terms of summarizing and synthesizing the findings. A comprehensive re-search included several electronic databases and library searched references in the relevant articles that were identified in the process of screening. Initially, screening of abstracts was done for the purpose of most pertinent work on the subject to be included in the current study. The researchers also screened the full text of each article in order to assess and screen the eligibility criteria for the purpose of most recent and updated data. Research articles were reviewed in order to determine the most significant studies particular to the research questions and the domain of research. Data extraction was done based upon the studies at the university level and factors were identified that affect university learners’ beliefs, attitudes and perceptions. Moreover, data was also deduced in order to know the relationship between learners’ beliefs, attitudes and perceptions with respect to proficiency and achievement. Findings provide evidences that learners have positive and favorable attitudes, beliefs and perceptions towards English language teaching and learning. The study also facilitates students learning with greater credibility of the teacher and put forth recommendations for future work.

This cross-sectional quantitative research was conducted to compare the average perceptions of students and teachers regarding students’ English language proficiency at the higher secondary level in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The participants were 1975 students and 108 teachers belonging to one each district of the seven divisions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Data were collected through pre-tested questionnaire i.e., one each for students and teachers. To analyze the significance difference between the average perceptions of students and teachers about higher secondary students’ English language proficiency; independent samples t-test was applied. The findings of the study revealed significant difference in teachers’ and students’ perceptions regarding students’ partial command over English language; use of English in and beyond classroom; expressing views fluently in English; students’ listening, speaking and reading skills; while no significant difference was seen regarding students’ full command over English language and their writing skill.
