An innovative synergy between solution electrospinning process technique and self‐healing of materials. A critical review

Abstract: An overview of recent advances related to self‐healing (SH) of materials and solution electrospinning (SEP) is provided. SH agents (SHAs) in electrospun form seems to be one of the most promising approaches for SH and exhibit an increasing trend for a wide range of applications. The aim of the current review paper is to report contributions and advances related to SH of materials by using SHAs in electrospun form and provide insights for further improvement of this promising technology. More specifically, this… Show more

“…Since 2010 [ 25 ], the use of a solution electrospinning process technique for the fabrication of healable structures (i.e., polymers and polymeric composite materials, coatings and batteries) is a common practice. On the other hand, the use of a melt electro-writing process (MEP) technique for SH purposes is still absent.…”

“…[41] By adjusting the proportion of various materials and nanoparticles, the properties can be greatly improved for membrane distillation (MD), reinforcement, and selfhealing applications. [42,43] Electrospun membranes have the advantages of adjustable pore size, porosity, and thickness for MD. [44] Compared with other separation processes, MD has a larger evaporation area, higher desalination rate, and lower operating temperature.…”

“…WPU materials are subject to small cracks and fractures caused by scratching and impact during use, which can shorten the lifespan of WPU or lead to catastrophic accidents. Therefore, it is important to endow WPU materials with self‐healing properties in order to achieve long‐term sustainability 27,28 . Intrinsic self‐healing, based on reversible or dynamic interactions, has received much attention.…”
