An Innovative Strategy for Oral Biofilm Control in Early Childhood Based on a Resveratrol-Cyclodextrin Nanotechnology Approach

Abstract: The purpose of this randomized controlled study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a novel oral spray containing resveratrol (RV) in controlling bacterial biofilm and gingival inflammation in early childhood. RV, a natural polyphenol, known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-infective activities, was included in a nanovector of 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrins (HPβCD) to improve its bioavailability. A total of 64 children between two and five years of age with plaque-induced gingivitis were randomly in… Show more

“…Additionally, a promising 2021 investigation by Berta et al, involved the design of an oral Nano-RES spray via encapsulation of crude RES in 2-hydroxypropylβ-cyclodextrins (i.e., RES-HPβCD) and tested its action on plaque formation in children. This study demonstrated that after using the spray once per day, the RES-HPβCD plaque was significantly reduced; the spray was also found to be doubled in efficacy when compared to tooth brushing alone [82].…”

“…Proper daily oral hygiene, fluoride applications, use of sealants, and regular dental checkups are essential to control caries development [29,30]. Early identification of caries is essential to prevent complications.…”

“…An oxacillin and rifampicin–cyclodextrin derivative has also shown significant improvement in the biofilm disruption ability of antibiotics alone. Berta et al (2021) showed that the children aged between two and five years who received oral treatment demonstrated a significant reduction in plaque formation . Further, Mishra et al (2021) showed that a β-cyclodextrin-loaded gellan/PVA complex inhibited biofilms of C. albicans and C. glabrata (approximately 70% inhibition) .…”
