An Inexpensive Suturing Training Model

Abstract: Introduction Demonstrations and training on live-subjects are not always the optimal means of introducing the students to minor oral surgery. Hence, the use of teaching models permit the students to handle the surgical instruments in a limited field under a semi-realistic circumstance and also helps in developing psychomotor skills in an non stressed situation. One among the competent exercise in oral surgery is suturing. Though there exist a variety of commercially available suturing training models, cost fac… Show more

(Carvalho et al, 2019;Ahmed et al, 2018;Kumaresan et al, 2013).…”

“…Currently there are no standard endometriosis training models. However, many different inexpensive models have been proposed in the past for exercising suturing or cutting tasks (orange [37], or clementine [38], foam [39], various fruits and vegetables [40], grapes [41]). All these and several other models have been investigated, but non were found to respond accurately to laser actions providing a repeatable mechanical and haptic behaviour.…”

“…The preclinical incision and suture training have usually been performed through sponge and molding material-related simulators [2], gypsum, molding material and orange peel [3], and animal tissue-based models. Although these methods have provided mucosa-like texture and skin, they do not simulate clinical conditions such as oval palate and alveolar ridge.…”

“…Regarding the previous published dental models [2,3], it was commonly observed a limitation of simulating different types of incisions on bone tissue to design mucoperiosteal flaps. Interestingly, the present model shows versatility for using by different academic levels of training (graduate and postgraduate), as well as for different specialties (surgery and periodontics).…”
