An inconvenient routine: introduction, establishment and spread of new non-native fishes in the Paraíba do Sul River basin, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: This study updates the introduction of non-native fishes Nannostomus beckfordi, Aphyocharax anisitsi, Knodus moenkhausii, Moenkhausia costae, Ancistrus multispinis and Astronotus ocellatus in the largest ornamental aquaculture center located in Paraíba do Sul River basin, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. There is evidence that all species are established and that some are spreading to a reservoir in the region. Management actions such as awareness campaigns to educate fish farmers and the inspection of fish farm… Show more

“…Furthermore, the comparison of life history traits suggested that successfully established species in this study tend to have an equilibrium strategy, which is principally the K-selected strategy of high investment in individual offspring at the expense of fecundity [ 76 ]. It is thus possible that K-selected traits are generally more beneficial for establishment within tropical regions although R-strategists such as several characid and cyprinid species have also succeeded in establishing (e.g., [ 57 , 96 ]). Considering the fact that K-strategists (such as Poecilia reticulata and Oreochromis mossambicus ) produce fewer but larger and more developed offspring that are more likely to avoid predation and survive [ 74 , 95 ], a lower absolute fecundity could therefore reflect a higher chance of survival and reproductive success within tropical environments.…”

“…It is a sedentary species that breeds multi-annually through parceled spawning preferably in lentic habitats (Godinho et al 2010, Martins et al 2012. Despite not being currently recognized as an invasive species, M. costae has already been introduced into rivers in the Paraíba do Sul basin in southeastern Brazil probably through the trade by aquarists and fish farmers (Magalhães et al 2019).…”
