The problems of multi-phase fluid flows are often encountered in engineering. In this study, a non-local numerical model of multi-phase fluid flows in the Lagrangian description is developed. Based on the peridynamic theory, a peridynamic differential operator is proposed which can convert any arbitrary order of differentials into their integral form without calculating the peridynamic parameters. Therefore, the Navier-Stokes equations including the surface tension forces are reformulated into their integral form. Subsequently, an updated Lagrangian algorithm for solving the multi-phase fluid flow problems is proposed. Besides, the particle shifting technology and moving least square algorithm are also adopted to avoid the possible tension instability. Finally, several benchmark multi-phase fluid flow problems such as two-phase hydrostatic problem, two-phase Poiseuille flow, and 2D square droplet deformation are solved to validate the proposed non-local model. It can be concluded from the current study that the peridynamic differential operator can be applied as an alternative method for multi-phase fluid flow simulation.

Under extreme operating conditions in gun barrel like high pressure and high temperature, fracture or cracks may propagate on solid propellant grains and become a threat to firing safety. The existence and the propagation of cracks will affect the combustion efficiency of solid propellant, and the thermal field of grain with cracks needs to be simulated. In this paper, we applied one of the Particle Methods, Moving Particle Semi‐implicit Method, to the investigation of the thermal field on solid propellant grain with cracks. An improved MPS operator is first introduced and the treatment on crack boundary including Robin boundary condition is also presented. The application of particle method to heat conduction is verified by the simulation of a seven‐perforated propellant grain under fixed temperature. Then, with different properties of cracks like the length, the number and the boundary conditions, the thermal field distribution of propellant grain and heat transfer efficiency are compared and analyzed.

With the significant development of computer hardware, many advanced numerical techniques have been proposed to investigate complex hydrodynamic problems. This article aims to provide a detailed review of moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) techniques and their application in ocean and coastal engineering. The achievements of the MPS method in stability and accuracy, boundary conditions, and acceleration techniques are discussed. The applications of the MPS method, which are classified into two main categories, namely, multiphase flows and fluid-structure interactions, are introduced. Finally, the prospects and conclusions are highlighted. The MPS method has the potential to solve practical problems.
