An improved maximum Signal to Interference Ratio scheduler at base station for real time services in WiMAX

Abstract

IEEE 802.16 supports different scheduling services to grant Quality of Service (QoS) for multimedia applications. IEEE standard has not specified any scheduling algorithm for fulfilling QoS for different traffic classes. In this paper, we have modified the maximum Signal-to-Interference Ratio (mSIR) scheduling algorithm, where Bandwidth allocation to Subscriber Sta- tions (SSs) is not only depending on Signal-to-Interference Ratio (SIR) value of SS. Queue length of SS is also considered for providing service by the Base Station (BS). The simulation resultsshow that by using the proposed scheduler the throughput increased to 8.08% in comparison to the mSIR scheduler. The proposed approach optimizes the usage of the bandwidth and resources in the WiMAX networks by enhancing the overall throughput and decreasing mean sojourn time of real time Polling Services (rtPS) class. Moreover, it does fair management for SS having low SIR and high real time data to deliver.
