An Improved Equivalent Homogenous Half‐Space Method and Reverse Fitting Analysis of Rayleigh Wave Dispersion Curves

Abstract: Theoretical analysis shows that there are several values of the phase velocity to a certain frequency of Rayleigh wave on the surface of a layered medium model, which is called the multiple mode property of Rayleigh wave. The multiple mode property of surface wave results in the complication of measured dispersion curves, especially when a soft interlayer exists in strata. This brings more difficulties to the explanation of the dispersion curves measured on this kind of site. In order to facilitate engineering… Show more

“…Error of the half-wavelength method has been proved to be great from practical case studies [11], which indicate that the correction factor β of penetration depth is related to Poisson's ratio of medium [11][12]. Based on the propagation characteristic of surface wave and the relationship between seismic energy and media properties, Yang [13] and Chen et al [11] determined the correction factors β of different media (Figure 1). For media existing in nature, Poisson's ratio is from 0.1 to 0.48, and the correction factor β is from 0.53 to 0.875.…”

“…Rayleigh wave exploration is typically divided into two types, namely the transient method and the steady state method. Because the operational efficiency of the transient method is much higher than that of steady state method, transient Rayleigh wave exploration is widely used in engineering practice [Liu et al, 1996;Wang et al, 2000;Zhang et al, 2001;Chen et al, 2006;Pan et al, 2011Pan et al, , 2015Cui et al, 2012].…”

“…Another synthetic X-component shot gather(Figure 5a) of the Model 4 is simulated using the same method and the same forward-simulation parameters. We simulated the records with 51 receivers evenly spaced 2 m in line on the surface and the nearest offset of 40 m. As shown inFigure 4band 5b, the two shot gathers are transformed into the f-v domain by high-resolutionLRT.According to the relationship between penetration depths of Rayleigh waves and wavelengths(Chen & Sun 2006), the surface waves of Model 3 and Model 4 can't penetrate into the depth of 100 m so the dispersion characteristics of pure surface waves should be similar to that inFigure 4a. The surface waves in Figure 4a are not disturbed by the reflections from the deep reflectors.…”
