An immunoradiometric assay for ferritin in the serum of normal subjects and patients with iron deficiency and iron overload

Abstract: SYNOPSIS An immunoradiometric assay for human ferritin has been developed. Concentrations of ferritin in the serum of male and female controls and patients with iron deficiency and iron overload were measured.Male controls were found to have a significantly higher mean concentration of serum ferritin than females. Patients with iron deficiency had significantly lower levels than normals of either sex and patients with iron overload had greatly elevated serum ferritin concentrations. It is thought that the seru… Show more

“…Serum ferritin is directly proportional to body iron stores and concentration <12 ng/ml reflects an iron-depleted state. [9][10][11][12][13] The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of iron deficiency in Santa Casa Hemocenter blood donors and to establish the frequency of iron deficiency in blood donors according to sex, whether they were first-time or multi-time donors, and the blood donation frequency per year.…”

“…Formulas have been devised to estimate iron stores from concentrations of serum ferritin in healthy individuals (Cook & Finch, 1979;Cook et al, 1986). The introduction of serum ferritin for the evaluation of the iron status (Addison et al, 1972;Jacobs et al, 1972) was a marked diagnostic improvement since low serum ferritin concentrations are only seen in iron de®ciency, indicating an absence of iron stores. Low serum ferritin is not associated with any other known condition (Walters et al, 1973).…”

“…Eleven healthy Brazilian individuals, living in non-endemic areas of Pernambuco, with negative stool examinations and no previous history of exposure to schistosoma infection were included as controls. Total IgE (E immunoglobulin) antibodies were measured in plasma by the ACCESS (Beckman Coulter) immunoassay, as described elsewhere (Addison et al 1972). Differences between paired groups were assessed by the Wilcoxon signed rank test and correlation between variables was determined by calculating the Spearman's rank correlation coefficients.…”
