An exploratory transmission mode of HIV/AIDS among older people based on data from multiple sources in China

Abstract: The HIV/AIDS cases and proportion in older people are continuously and rapidly increasing in China, especially in males. However, the transmission mechanism is not well understood. This study aims to explore the transmission mechanism of HIV/AIDS and potential ways to prevent or control HIV/AIDS transmission in a city in southwestern China. Data from multiple sources, including HIV/AIDS case reports in 2010–2020, a survey of HIV/AIDS cases in 2020, and sentinel surveillance data of female sex workers (FSWs) in… Show more

“…Older people (aged ≥ 50 years) were more likely to form clusters in the transmission network (50%, 199/398), and high-risk linkages (72.0%, 113/157) and individuals who carried the resistance mutation, K103N (87.5%, 56/64), were part of the largest CRF07_BC cluster (LC1). Elderly men, especially younger ones, still have psychological and physical needs [21] . Most male (94.4%, 85/90) individuals in the four LCs self-reported nonmarital heterosexual sexual contact.…”

“…High-density and continuous cross-sectional sampling for molecular epidemiological analysis revealed that older people play an important role in the transmission of speci c subtypes and high pretreatment drug resistance (PDR) in Shaoxing city from 2019 to 2023. The ageing of individuals affected by the HIV epidemic in China [10] is particularly signi cant in Shaoxing. This high proportion of sampling could re ect the characteristics of HIV-1 transmission in Shaoxing more comprehensively and reduce deviation and insu ciency.…”

“…New challenge need to paid significant attention. Shortage of sexual education in university students in China, was results in unoptimistic problem on their sexual health [ 29 , 30 ]. Innovative and optimized prevention and treatment methods in HIV/AIDS should be provided through internet communities, including preexposure and postexposure prophylaxis and self-testing services.…”

“…3 In many countries, new HIV infections among older adults are increasing 4,5 including the Asia-Pacific region. 6,7 Acquiring HIV at an older age has also been associated with higher morbidity and mortality compared to younger adults. 8,9 The exact reasons for their poorer prognosis especially in the current treat-all era is not well understood.…”
