An experimental investigation on slicing of potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystal

Abstract: Because of its unique properties, potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystals are widely used for electro-optical applications. Slicing is needed to make potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystal lens with desired shapes. However, reported studies on slicing of potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystal are scarce. This article presents an experimental investigation on slicing of potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystals. Output parameters studied include surface roughness, flatness error, parallelism error, and subsurface… Show more

“…Wang, et al studied the deviation of crystal plane orientation, parallelism between opposite surfaces and the sub-surface damages introduced in KDP slicing process. After the final slicing step, the machining allowance, which needs to be removed in the following diamond cutting process, was reported as 544m [23] . Based on the study of Wang et al and the experimental results, a grinding process chain is proposed.…”

“…In the processing of KDP crystal, the cutting parameters were optimised to forecast and improve the surface quality and topography through the analyses of cutting simulation or experiment. 1114 Modelling and simulating of cutting process were also used to analyse and evaluate the machined surface topography of other materials. 15,16 Cao et al 17 proposed a more reasonable selection method of cutting parameters based on surface roughness of workpiece.…”

“…However, the laser damage threshold (LDT) of a machined KDP crystal is far below its intrinsic damage threshold 79 , which has become one of the key technical bottlenecks that severely hinders the development of ICF reactors. Hence, extensive studies on machining-induced damage and its effect on the properties of the KDP material have been carried out 1014 . For example, on a micron or larger scale, various surface and subsurface defects, such as pits, cracks, and nicks, caused during KDP lens surfacing by different methods have been reported.…”
