An Experimental Investigation of the Turbulence Effect on the Combustion Propagation in a Rapid Compression Machine

Abstract: The role of different combustion modes that govern the combustion propagation inside a rapid compression machine is discussed. Aiming at the control of the compression generated turbulence, the careful design of the UPMC-RCM is described. A methodology is then proposed to investigate the influence of the residual post-compression turbulence level on the visible combustion propagation process. Through the fuel type, the main parameter varied is the ratio of the ignition delay time to the characteristic decay ti… Show more

“…Systematic optimization of crevice and entrance channel geometry could be undertaken with aid of automated simulations. Recent experimental 18 and theoretical 19 works suggest that turbulence may be significant and large eddy simulation should be considered in future studies supported by experimental measurements.…”

“…Indeed, the locations of the vortices observed at TDC match those of the thermal kernels. As outlined by Guibert et al [19], these vortices are formed due to gas pinching between the bottom of the cylinder and the piston head. These vortices convey cool gases from the walls towards the centre of the combustion chamber.…”

“…An experimental investigation of the turbulence effect on the combustion propagation in a rapid compression machine has been previously conducted in a RCM [19]. This machine can be separated into four main modules: the hydraulic system, a single piston moving inside a precompression chamber (diameter: 91.5 mm), the combustion chamber (diameter: 40 mm, height: 40 mm), and the acquisition and control system.…”

“…Apart from direct measurement of ignition delay time, ex-situ and in-situ speciation measurements can also be conducted to understand the evolution profile of different species. Direct visualization techniques such as Schlieren imaging and chemiluminescence have been used to examine the development of the 38 combustion event [52,79,80]. Moreover, Guibert et al [80] also performed an experimental investigation of the turbulence effect on combustion propagation using particle image velocimetry to determine flow characteristics prior to ignition in a rapid compression machine.…”
