An examination of periodontal treatment and per member per month (PMPM) medical costs in an insured population

Abstract: Background: Chronic medical conditions have been associated with periodontal disease. This study examined if periodontal treatment can contribute to changes in overall risk and medical expenditures for three chronic conditions [Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), and Cerebrovascular Disease (CVD)].

“…One study reported that subjective assessment of oral health was related to medical costs . Other epidemiological studies reported the association between periodontitis and medical costs . These studies, however, had methodological limitations, including lack of control for potential confounders, such as socioeconomic and serum values.…”

“…Besides the direct costs of providing medical care to stroke patients, there are also indirect costs associated with lost productivity. Because we could not obtain data to estimate the cost of recovery period care or the cost of reduced productivity, as was the case of earlier research showing the possible effect of periodontitis on disease‐specific (including cerebrovascular disease) medical costs, it was assumed that the economic burden of stroke was underestimated in the current analyses . Additionally, stroke‐related medical care costs vary according to their types (e.g.…”
