“…In any case this scoring explains some of the low validity values obtained for essay tests. Other workers have reported similar discrepancies (Hartog and Rhodes, 1935;Bull, 1956;Lennox, 1967). Table 3 shows the correlations between professor I and various staff members each scoring different essays (test 6, 1968; 192 scripts for each examiner, test 6, 1969, 196 scripts for each examiner).…”

Correlation of marks given for the same set of essays by different examiners has been poor (Lennox, Anderson, and Moorhouse, 1957) even to the extent that a model essay answer, prepared by the senior examiner in a group and included incognito with the student essays, has received marks varying from fail to high distinction grade from other examiners (Bull, 1956).…”

“…In the present study, the average mark changes for the subjects investigated varied from 0.8 to 6.7. In the light of this evidence, and evidence collected from a whole variety of marking reliability studies dating right back to the work of Hartog and Rhodes (1935), it is not before time that the Schools Council are now warning the users of GCE and other public examination grades that " . .…”

“…Concern about establishing the reliability of examinations stems from the early part of this century (e.g. Hartog & Rhodes, 1935). More recently, Murphy (1978Murphy ( , 1982 published some of the most in-depth analyses of marking reliability.…”
