The petroleum industry has addressed wax problems since its inception. Every year, considerable resources are expended on wax removal, which accordingly cause significant economic loss. As one of the materials in chemical treatments, polymeric compounds referred to as ''wax-crystal modifier'', is being widely used to improve flow properties and/or combat wax deposition for waxy crude oils. This article reviews the recent achievements with regard to the flow improvement and wax inhibition of waxy oils using traditional polymeric wax crystal modifiers, such as ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), poly(ethylene-butene) (PEB), and polyethylenepoly(ethylene-propylene) (PE-PEP), as well as the development of novel polymers for potential use in the near future. The goal of this review is to assist people understand the advances in this topic.

The deposition or crystallization of wax paraffin from crude oils is one of the crucial issues faced in the petroleum industry particularly when the temperature of the crude oil is below the wax appearance temperature (WAT). Pour Point Depressants (PPDs) chemical is proven to be an efficient way to solve this problem. This study investigated poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate(EVA)) and Poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene)(MA) polymer inhibitors on the van der Waals intermolecular interaction between the major wax component molecule n-octacosane C 28 H 58 , via molecular dynamics simulation (MD) technique on Material Studio 5.5 software Package. COMPASS force field was applied to analyse the desired structural property, Radial Distribution Function (RDF). The results showed that the radial distribution function and g (r) value is able to give the insight on which particular type of fuctional atoms were benefit to inhibit the self-agglomerate of the wax crystal formation. The presence of carbonyl oxygen in EVA plays a significant role to inhibit the wax formation through the van der Waals interaction between active hydrogen atoms in n-octacosane molecule. Therefore the chances of wax inhibition in octacosane is higher by introduced EVA as inhibitor compared to MA.

Review of Solvents Based on Biomass for Mitigation of Wax Paraffin in Indonesian Oilfield

This paper presents a review of the expectations and challenges of using biomass in the prevention and slowing of paraffin wax deposition that takes place during the crude oil production process. The inhibition of the deposition process involves the use of solvents from biomass that are generally available around the crude oil production field. The processes used to scale down the precipitation of wax include mixing crude oil with the manufacturer's solvent composed of toluene and xylene. The goal is to assess solvents sourced from biomass that are capable to slow down the wax deposition process. Wax appearance temperature is an important characteristic to evaluate the possible wax precipitation of a given fluid. Wax precipitation can be reduced by using some chemical additives, often called the pour point depressant. This additive is expected to be produced from local biomass which can compete with solvents currently produced on the market.
