Aim: This study was undertaken to study the effect of three most commonly used dentifrices for denture cleaning and to find out any positive association between number of strokes by toothbrush and surface roughness of acrylic resin. Materials and methods:About 40 acrylic rectangular blocks with high finish were polished until surface roughness was calculated as 0 µm. The materials tested were distilled water as a control group, Patanjali Dant Kanti, Colgate Total Cream, and Cleansodent as dentifrices. Stroking was done with dentifrices, and surface roughness readings were recorded at 1,000, 9,000, and 18,000 strokes.Results: Patanjali Dant Kanti was found to have maximum abrasive potential followed by Colgate Total Cream, followed by Cleansodent and least by distilled water. Conclusion:Surface roughness was found to be directly proportional to the type, size, and fineness of the abrasive component used; the professional denture cleanser (Cleansodent) has less abrasive potential than the regular toothpastes. Among those tested, the highest abrasive potential was found in Patanjali Dant Kanti and lowest by Cleansodent (denture cleanser).Clinical significance: The patient as well as dentist should choose the dentifrice with utmost care noting the size and type of abrasives used. Washing the dentures normally with water without toothbrush daily and cleaning of dentures once in 10 to 15 days with a soft toothbrush and professional denture cleanser should be the line of maintenance of dentures.

Acrylic resins used for provisional prostheses should have satisfactory superficial characteristics in order to ensure gingival health and low bacterial attachment. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the superficial roughness and contact angle after two types of polishing and the Vickers hardness of three acrylic resins (Duralay -G1, Dencrilay -G2, and Dencor -G3), all shade 66, indicated for provisional fixed prostheses. Five 20 x 3 ± 1 mm diameter discoid specimens were obtained for each group. One side of the specimens was subjected to standard polishing (pumice and whiting slurry), and the opposite side was polished with special tips. The mean roughness and contact angles of the materials were measured. The specimens were subjected to the Vickers microhardness test, which indicated that standard polishing produced a surface roughness equivalent to that of the special tips. The contact angles obtained with the standard polishing were equivalent to those observed in the special tips group. The microhardness of G1 and G3 resins showed statistical differences.

ÖZETAmaç: Protez kaide materyallerinin yüzey pürüzlülüğü protezin klinik kullanımını etkileyen önemli bir özel-liktir. Bu çalıĢmanın amacı farklı cila materyallerinin polimetilmetakrilat (PMMA) ve poliamid içerikli protez kaide maddelerinin, temizleme tableti uygulama sonrası yüzey pürüzlülüğüne etkisinin değerlendirilmesidir. Gereç ve Yöntem: ÇalıĢmada polimetilmetakrilat (QC -20) ve poliamid (Deflex) esaslı iki farklı kaide maddesi kullanılarak toplamda 60 adet örnek 3 mm kalınlık ve 20 mm çapta diskler halinde (n=10) hazırlandı. Kontrol grubunda örnekler pomza ve kıl fırça ile cilalandı. Ġkinci grup örneklere pomza ile yapılan cilayı takiben Universal Polishing Paste, üçüncü gruba ise Palaseal cila materyali uygulandı. Yüzey pürüzlülük öl-çümleri örnekler efervesan tablet formundaki Corega temizleyici solüsyon uygulamadan önce ve sonra dijital bir profilometre cihazı kullanılarak yapıldı. Örneklerin pürüzlülük değiĢiklikleri (Ra) iki yönlü varyans analizi ve Fisher's LSD test ile istatiksel olarak karĢılaĢtırıldı (p<0,05) Bulgular: Cila materyalleri ve protez kaideleri arasın-da istatiksel olarak anlamlı etkileĢimler bulundu (p< 0,001). Cila materyali uygulanan bütün örnekler, sadece pomza ile cilalanan kontrol gruplarına göre daha düĢük pürüzlülük değerleri gösterdi (p<0,001). Protez temizleyicisi polimetilmetakrilat ve poliamid rezinlerinin pürüzlülüğünü anlamlı olarak arttırdı (p<0,001) Sonuç: Protez cila materyallerinin uygulanması ile protez yüzeylerinin daha düzgün hale getirilebileceği ve protez temizleyici tabletlerin neden olabileceği yüzey pürüzlülüğünü azaltabileceği göz önünde bulundurulmalıdır. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different polishing materials on surface roughness of polymethlymethacrylate and polyamide denture base resins after use of a denture cleaner. Material and Method: Total of 60 samples were prepared from polymethlymethacrylate (QC-20) and polyamide (Deflex) as 3 mm thickness and 20 mm diameter disc shaped (n=10). Samples were polished with pumice and bristle brush in control groups. Universal Polishing Paste were subjected to the second group after pumice and Palaseal were subjected to the third group. Surface roughness test was performed with a digital prophylometer (Ra) before and after effervesance denture cleaner (Corega). Data were analysed by two way ANOVA and Fischers LSD post hoc test (p<0,05). Results: Polish materials and denture bases showed significant interactions (p<0,001). Groups polished with polish materials showed significantly lower surface roughness values when compared to control groups that polished only with pumice (p<0,001).
