Objective The study aim was to elucidate the degree to which hyper‐palatable foods (HPF) are consumed during binge episodes compared to restricting episodes, and to test the association between HPF intake during each episode and respective episode frequency. Method This study was a secondary analysis of data from a larger study on eating disorders. The present sample included adults (N = 147, 83% women) diagnosed with sub‐threshold (41%) or full‐threshold (59%) bulimia nervosa (BN). Foods consumed during binge and restricting episodes were assessed using the Eating Pathology Symptoms Inventory–Clinician Rated Version. A standardized definition of HPF developed previously was applied to foods consumed during binge and restricting episodes. A Wilcoxon matched‐pairs signed‐rank test was used to test the difference between total caloric intake from HPF (KcalHPF) and percentage of caloric intake from HPF (PercHPF) during binge episodes relative to restricting episodes. Four linear regression models tested HPF intake (KcalHPF and PercHPF) during both episode types (binge and restricting) as predictors of respective episode frequency. Results There was a significant difference between median KcalHPF (1846.6 vs. 279.6; Z = −13.38, p < .001) and PercHPF during binge compared to restricting episodes (95% vs. 61%; Z = −7.35, p < .001). Regression analyses demonstrated that KcalHPF during binge episodes was significantly associated with binge episode frequency (B = 0.002; p < .001), but not PercHPF (p = .287). Discussion Results suggest that HPF may be primarily consumed during binge episodes among individuals with BN, and may be associated with greater binge‐eating frequency. Public Significance Findings from the current study support an underlying assumption of theoretical models of binge eating, suggesting that highly rewarding, hyper‐palatable foods (HPF), may constitute the vast majority of energy intake during binge‐eating episodes. Additionally, a substantial amount of energy intake from HPF may occur during restricting episodes among people with bulimia nervosa. Greater HPF intake during binge eating may also be associated with binge‐eating severity.

Introducción: el trastorno por atracón (TpA) es la psicopatología alimentaria más prevalente entre la población, por lo que son necesarios instrumentos validados de tamizaje para su detección y diagnóstico oportuno. Objetivo: confirmar la estructura factorial de la Escala de Atracón Alimentario (BES) a través del análisis factorial confirmatorio (AFC) y proponer un punto de corte en una muestra mexicana. Método: la muestra fue no probabilística constituida por 421 personas (66.7% mujeres) con un rango de edad de 18 a 57 años (M = 23.92, DE = 7.38) provenientes de la ciudad de México y zona metropolitana. Todos los participantes contestaron dos instrumentos que evaluaban sintomatología de TpA y aquellos que puntuaron alto fueron entrevistados para diagnóstico del trastorno. Resultados: de las 421 personas, se diagnosticaron 60 con TpA. Se observó una adecuada consistencia interna del instrumento y el AFC ratificó la estructura de la versión original de dos factores: 1) manifestaciones cognitivas y 2) manifestaciones conductuales, presentando un buen ajuste de los datos. Se exploraron diferentes puntos de corte, observando el 17 como el más adecuado de acuerdo con los valores de sensibilidad (98%) y especificidad (93%). Conclusión: estos resultados contribuyen al desarrollo de una medida de evaluación de atracón alimentario en la población mexicana y proporciona una exploración del BES válida para la detección de sintomatología de TpA tanto en hombres como en mujeres.

The prevalence of binge eating spectrum conditions (BESC) are increasing globally. However, there is a lack of data from general population samples in low- and middle-income countries. Thus, this study described the food consumption during objective binge eating episodes (OBE) in people with BESC from a metropolitan city in Brazil. Participants comprised 136 adults (18 years old–60 years old) with Binge Eating Disorder (BED), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), or recurrent binge eating (RBE) from a two-phase epidemiological survey. They were interviewed in their homes by trained lay interviewers using the Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns updated for the DSM-5 to assess BESC diagnosis and food consumption during a typical OBE. Overall, participants consumed a mean of 1067 kcal during the episodes. For the most part, these calories were derived from carbohydrates (58%) and lipids (30%), irrespective of the diagnosis. Regarding food item consumption, individuals with BED and RBE consumed staple foods (mainly rice and beans) more frequently than those with BN. Conversely, participants with BN ingested sugar-sweetened beverages more frequently than the BED group. In conclusion, there were differences in the eating patterns of individuals with BESC in Brazil. BED and RBE participants consumed more typical foods, whereas those with BN preferred foods with a high content of energy during their OBE.
