An Evaluation Method of Bacterial Flora in Contaminated Soils -For the Purpose of a Countermeasure against H<SUB>2</SUB>S Gas Production-

Abstract: Gas productions in illegal dumping sites and waste landfills have caused serious problems. The gas production was induced by bacterial flora inhabited soils. In order to construct a culture independent evaluation system of the soil bacteria, bacterial communities were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively, about 16 soil samples at 4 sites, both using culture and culture-independent methods. “…In Japan, the production of toxic gases such as H 2 S and CH 4 at waste disposal fields and illegal dumping sites is a serious social problem. In our laboratory, we have developed culture-independent or nucleic acids-based methods for studying the relation between microbial flora and H 2 S gas production in polluted soils (37), because it is well known that soil bacteria participate in the material cycle of atmospheric gases and in redox-transitions of metal.
