An Esterification Kinetics Experiment That Relies on the Sense of Smell

Abstract: This experiment involves an esterification synthesis to study reaction kinetics where students explore these topics utilizing the sense of smell rather than the traditional approach of using spectroscopic methods. Students study the effects of various factors including the concentration of the carboxylic acid and the amounts of the catalyst or alcohols added. The kinetics in relation to the molecular structure is studied by changing the chain lengths and branching of alcohols or the carboxylic acids and inferr… Show more

“…Die Ester aus Alkanolen und Carbonsäuren spielen für das olfaktorische Schmecken eine erhebliche, häufig sogar maßgebliche Rolle. Demzufolge sind die Synthesen von Estern im Schülerexperiment, die Untersuchung der Reaktionskinetik und der Geruch ihrer Ester beschrieben worden [1].…”

“…Esterification is a common reaction conducted in the Organic laboratory, especially due to the appeal of the aromas of some esters (37)(38)(39)(40). In FSC labs, students have explored impacts of the substitution on nine benzoic acids and different reaction conditions (29).…”

“…Poon and Ovadia (2008) developed tactile-based teaching materials for the effective processing of chemistry courses. Bromfield- Lee and Oliver-Hoyo (2009) developed laboratory activity to help students better understand the esterification of chemistry using their sense of smell. Boyd-Kimball (2012) developed adaptive tools and teaching techniques for blind students studying at the undergraduate level chemistry department.…”
