An epidemiological study of brucellosis on mainland China during 2004–2018

Abstract: Brucellosis, caused by infection with Brucella spp., is an important zoonosis worldwide which can significantly affect human health and the profitability of livestock industries (Mcdermott et al., 2013). Although brucellosis in humans has been successfully controlled in several countries, it remains endemic in the Middle East, the Mediterranean region, sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and parts of Asia, with approximately half a million human cases reported annually (Pappas et al., 2006). Infection of humans … Show more

“…Shaanxi Province is in the centre of northern China and includes Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Ningxia, and Shanxi; these nearby provinces have all reported a high prevalence of brucellosis, and the epidemic in human brucellosis peaked later than in the northern provinces. Although the annual average incidence rate (2.48/100,000) of human brucellosis in this region is significantly lower than that in other northern regions 20 , the epidemiological features have obviously changed. The county numbers of reported cases increased from 36 in 2008 to 84 in 2020.…”

“…A total of 524,980 human cases of brucellosis with an average annual incidence of 2.6 cases per 100,000 residents were reported in mainland China for the period 2004–2018 (Wang et al., 2020). Similarly, the overall apparent seroprevalence of brucellosis in humans was 27.3% (95% CI: 23.7%–31.2%) in Mongolia (Zolzaya et al., 2014).…”

“…Similar epidemiologic characteristics were found in Kazakhstan, where 75% of the newly diagnosed brucellosis cases were in the 10–39 age group, and 85.8% of the patients were rural residents (Shevtsova et al., 2019). People under 35 years of age are less likely to work in the livestock industries than those in the 36–54 age group, and people above 55 years in other regions of China (Wang et al., 2020).…”

“…HB is a major public health crisis in China. Although its true incidence remains largely unknown, it is conservatively estimated to vary from less than 0.03 to more than 160 individuals per 100,000 ( Pappas et al, 2006 ; Lai et al, 2017 ; Wang et al, 2020 ). It is important to have early detection and treatment of suspected cases.…”
