An Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for Detection of Antibodies to Avian Adenovirus and Avian Adenovirus-Associated Virus in Chickens

Abstract: An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay system (ELISA) was adapted for the detection of antibodies to avian adenovirus (AV) and avian adenovirus-associated virus (A-AV). Both before and after exposure, sera from chickens undergoing natural and experimental infections were assayed by ELISA, virus neutralization (VN), and immunodiffusion (ID) for antibody to both CELO virus and A-AV. The ELISA system was found to be comparable to VN for determining antibody concentrations to CELO virus and A-AV. In many cases, ELIS… Show more

“…(Meulemans and Halen, 1982;York et al, 1983). Although non-specific binding by avian antibodies have been described with several ELISA tests using avian sera (Slaght et al, 1979;Dawson et al, 1980;York et al, 1983), it was not a problem in the test described here probably because each serum sample was tested in parallel on negative control antigen as well as on positive antigen, with the results expressed as positive-negative absorbance difference.…”

“…In poultry virology, this test has been shown to be of value to measure antibodies against infectious bronchitis virus (Mockett and Darbyshire, 1980;Soula and Moreau, 1981), reovirus (Slaght et al, 1978), infectious bursal disease virus (Marquardt et al, 1980;Howie and Thorsen, 1981), rotavirus (Bartz etal, 1980) and adenovirus (Dawson et al, 1980). The present paper describes the application of the ELISA to the detection of antibodies against infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) virus in chicken serum.…”

“…An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the detection of antibodies against fowl adenovirus in 1980 (Dawson et al, 1980), TCoV in 1989 , and enterovirus in 1993 (Hayhow & Saif, 1993). And an association of this technique with an immunohistochemistry test demonstrated HEV distribution on organism and the pathogenesis of the disease in inoculated turkeys (Silim & Thorsen, 1981).…”
