An Envelope Correlation Formula for(N,N)MIMO Antenna Arrays Using Input Scattering Parameters, and Including Power Losses

Abstract: The scattering parameter formulation for the envelope correlation in an(N,N)MIMO antenna array has been modified to take the intrinsic antenna power losses into account. This method of calculation provides a major simplification over the use of antenna radiation field patterns. Its accuracy is illustrated in three examples, which also show that the locations of the correlation minima are sensitive to the intrinsic losses.

“…Envelope correlation coefficient ρ e is an important figure of merit which is used to evaluate the overall diversity performance of MIMO antennas. It can be determined by many approaches such as full sphere complex radiation pattern, impedance matrix, Clarke's formula and S parameters . Among those, the quicker approach based on S parameters as in Ref.…”

“…Moreover, the parameter variation of the FR4 substrate and the imperfection in fabrication could also be part of the reasons for the discrepancies. Besides isolation, the ECC is another important parameter to present for a MIMO antenna system [16]. Generally speaking, ECC < 0.5 is a criterion suitable for practical applications [17].…”
