An empirical study of biological scientists’ article sharing through ResearchGate

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate how attitudinal, normative and control beliefs influence scientists’ article sharing through ResearchGate. Design/methodology/approach A survey method was employed to examine a research model of scientists’ article sharing through ResearchGate. A total of 264 survey responses from biological scientists in the USA were used to evaluate the research model by using partial least square based structural equation modeling. Findings The results showed that scie… Show more

“…In the articles she reviewed, social sciences faculty self-archived to personal websites or repositories at a moderate rate compared with the sciences, and there were notable differences between the disciplines. Disciplinary practices, as well as the influence of departmental colleagues and co-authors, can motivate authors to self-archive (Spezi et al, 2013;Y. Kim, 2018).…”

“…Highly cited publications are especially relevant since a large number of citations for a particular research publication show a positive influence in the research; such publications offer a valuable understanding about the influence of authors and subjects in a field of research over time (Mushtaq et al 2020). Emerging information and communication technologies have enabled new scholarly communication methods of knowledge sharing through institutional repositories (IRs) and scholarly social media (Kim 2018). Academic Social Networks (ASNs) like Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/citations) and Research Gate (https://www.researchgate.net), have become an accepted part of the academic landscape, as these provide a range of metrics for both authors and articles (Marttn-Marttn et al 2016).…”

“…It should be noted that ReaserchGate as an academic social networking site has attracted a great deal of attention (e.g. Thelwall and Kousha, 2015;Jeng et al, 2017;Kim, 2018). Thelwall and Kousha (2015) showed that ResearchGate is being used at academic institutions around the world, with high impact universities having an accumulation score of their members on ResearchGate.…”

“…Their results illustrated that the effect of a questioner is more than disciplinary factors. Kim (2018) investigated that how attitudinal, normative and control beliefs influence scientists' article sharing through ResearchGate. He found that academic libraries can better promote their scientists' article sharing through digital platforms such as institutional repositories as well as scholarly social media.…”
