Calcination of carbonate rocks during the manufacture of cement produced 5% of global CO2 emissions from all industrial process and fossil-fuel combustion in 20131, 2. Considerable attention has been paid to quantifying these industrial process emissions from cement production2, 3, but the natural reversal of the process—carbonation—has received little attention in carbon cycle studies. Here, we use new and existing data on cement materials during cement service life, demolition, and secondary use of concrete waste to estimate regional and global CO2 uptake between 1930 and 2013 using an analytical model describing carbonation chemistry. We find that carbonation of cement materials over their life cycle represents a large and growing net sink of CO2, increasing from 0.10 GtC yr−1 in 1998 to 0.25 GtC yr−1 in 2013. In total, we estimate that a cumulative amount of 4.5 GtC has been sequestered in carbonating cement materials from 1930 to 2013, offsetting 43% of the CO2 emissions from production of cement over the same period, not including emissions associated with fossil use during cement production. Abstract:The scale of the industrial chain for construction waste reclamation in China is still at a small magnitude with a relatively slow development rate, yet to form an industrial chain that is mature. With the industrial chain theory, this paper takes Guangzhou as an example to construct a simulation model of the scale of industrial chain of construction waste reclamation based on system dynamics. As the results show: (1) though the subsidy policy carried out by the government has a significant effect on the development of the industrial chain of construction waste reclamation, a greater amount of compensation will not necessarily lead to a larger scale of industrial chain of construction waste.(2) The inventory optimization management is conducive to promote the development of industrial chain of construction waste. (3) The governmental compensation amount of RMB 50,000 per 10,000 tons in the next 5 to 10 years will be the optimal to ensure the rapid development of the industrial chain of construction waste. (4) The scale of the industrial chain of construction waste reclamation, the inventory of the dealers and the inventory of resource-oriented enterprises interact and mutually constrain, implying that with the expansion of the production scale of resource-oriented enterprises, the oscillation amplitude of the inventory of the dealers will become greater while the frequency will be smaller .The conclusion of the study provides reference value and theoretical basis for the development of industrial waste resource industry chain.

Abstract-Construction waste is generated throughout the construction process such as during site clearance, material use, material damage, material non-use, excess procurement and human error. The exact quantity and composition of construction waste generated throughout the projects are difficult to be identified as they are keep on changing due to the dynamic nature of the construction activities. Different stages of construction generates different types and composition of waste. Therefore the trend of waste generated throughout the construction stages need to be identified. This paper will critically review literature on construction waste in order to understand the nature of waste generation from construction activities. Based on the literature studied, this paper propose a method to quantify waste for conventional construction. The proposed method comprises four steps. First is identification of construction stages and expected waste generated. Second is selection of construction sites with similar characteristics for uniform investigation. Third is sorting and weighing of mixed waste collected in a dumpster. The last step is summation of the recorded quantity. It is expected that the proposed method should be practical and suits current situation of Malaysian construction projects and support the agenda of National Strategic Plan for Solid Waste Management.
