An Emerging Family of Hybrid Nanomaterials: Metal–Organic Framework/Aerogel Composites

Abstract: Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline nanoporous coordination polymers made of metal ions and organic linkers. Aerogels are highly nanoporous amorphous polymers that can be organic, inorganic, or hybrid. Both of these unique materials have been extensively investigated in many laboratories around the world for a wide range of applications ranging from separations to catalysis, resulting in thousands of published articles in a wide variety of journals. MOF/aerogel composites (MOFACs) are a new class o… Show more

“…For environmental applications, the advances in aerogels should focus on materials (adsorbents, absorbents, sensors, catalysts) with a better performance than the current solutions (if any) in the market in terms of reliability, fast response, easy to use and recyclable [97]. Moreover, the following issues should also be taken into account (i) the search of new raw materials and feedstocks, (ii) a processing with a responsible management of resources, and/or (iii) a competitive production cost [98].…”

“…The need for the versatility of textural properties such the combination of micro and mesostructured support materials is accelerating for many areas including industrial catalysis. Aerogel supported bimetallic NPs and their composites with microporous materials such the MOFs (Ulker et al, 2013;Inonu et al, 2018) could bring many advantages, such as selectivity control for such processes. No studies on using carbohydrate aerogels as supports for bimetallic NPs have been reported so far.…”

“…Metal organic framework aerogel composites (MOFACs) are a new class of nanostructured materials owing to its high surface area, combined micro and meso porosities and ease of preparation [140]. The fascinating properties of MOFACs composites make them as potential candidates for tissue engineering, drug delivery, catalysis, adsorption, separation, energy conversion and storage as well.…”
