Abstract: An elevated level of BNP in plasma is independently associated with collateral development; patients with good collaterals tend to have a higher BNP level.

“…26,27 Although BNP is associated with myocardial ischemia, there is a discrepancy in the study of Xi et al about the relationship between CCC and NT-proBNP. 25 According to their interpretation, they explained this discrepancy with the collateral formation, which had a complex role on prognosis in CAD patients. On the other hand, BNP was recently demonstrated to be a potential stimulator of angi-ogenesis and arteriogenesis.…”

“…Up to now, only one study investigated the relationship between CCC and BNP. 25 They reported that elevated plasma BNP level was independently associated with CCC. 25 But, contrary to our study, patients with well-developed collaterals tended to have a higher BNP level.…”

“…On the other hand, in another study BNP levels were found to be significantly higher in patients with well-developed coronary collaterals and this result was explained by the potential triggering effect of BNP on angiogenesis. 10 Inconsistency between the results could be explained by the difference between study populations and definitions used to describe CCC status. In our study well-developed CC group was composed of only Rentrop grade 3 collaterals.…”

“…Thus, this work aimed to determine whether part of the cardioprotective effect of BNP treatment in infarcted hearts relates to increased neovascularisation, since high BNP levels in plasma are associated with increased collateral development in patients with coronary artery disease 28 .…”
